No mud, no lotus

— Thich Nhat Hanh

Just as the lotus transforms muck into a beautiful blossom, we can use our challenges to cultivate deep empathy, strength, and wisdom. You cannot have true joy without understanding sorrow. You cannot appreciate peace without experiencing chaos.

Lotus is one of the most stunning blossoms in the world, celebrated for its purity and grace. Yet, it doesn't grow in sterile, pristine environments. It grows in thick, murky, stagnant mud. Without that nutrient-rich mud, the lotus cannot take root. Without the mud, the flower cannot bloom.

The next time you find yourself wading through a difficult season, try not to fight the current. Remember that the mud isn't there to destroy you. It is there to feed the beautiful things you are about to become.

Nothing outside yourself can cause you any trouble. You yourself make the waves in your mind. If you leave your mind as it is, it will become calm.

— Zen master Shunryu Suzuki — Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind

This quote points to a simple but transformative truth: most of the turbulence we experience doesn't come from the world itself, but from the way our mind reacts to it.

Life brings challenges, surprises, and discomfort — that part is unavoidable. But the waves we feel inside, the agitation, the spiralling thoughts, the emotional storms, are often created by our own interpretations and resistance.

When you realise that inner trouble comes from within, you also realise you have the power to ease it. You don't need the world to change. You don't need every situation to be perfect. You simply need to stop feeding the mental waves.

This is where meditation, mindfulness, and self-awareness become powerful tools: they help you see your thoughts without getting swept away by them. The waves are yours, and so is the calm.
